Can't really see Big Brown not a part of it, though, as that just isn't his game.
On the filly I'll simply wish you luck. You'll need it.

Colonel John fits best here, as you've said, and is the choice. 4-1 is acceptable but just barely, but going deeper than the exacta on such a dodgy field is risky. Court Vision, Z Fortune and Pyro fit well in the two hole and I'll try to catch a triple by adding Gayego, Tale of Ekati and maybe Cool Coal Man.

-KDAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35403587.post-33507004060411377122008-05-02T12:09:00.000-06:002008-05-02T12:09:00.000-06:00A huge day of racing looms, and I haven't had the ...A huge day of racing looms, and I haven't had the chance to thoroughly scour the pps, but there are a few horses I like running tomorrow. Unfortunately, I probably won't actually get to wager on anything except the Derby since CD is hanging everyone out to dry this year.

The CD S. is one of a few races where the field is not overpowering and appears to be evenly matched. I'm going to assume that Wanderin Boy will not run here, and I'd try to beat him anyway. Hewitts is a horse that I have an interest in simply because I've followed him in SoCal and he has shown promise. He had an injury last year that kept him on the sidelines for awhile, so he didn't really get to show his best stuff. He's 2-2 at 7F and should really improve on a dirt track. His only dirt run came over the old SA track and that was his career debut, which is not a really good gauge. Island Warrior is another who's 2-2 at the distance, but he doesn't have as much upside as Hewitts. Noonmark is a horse I like because I think he'll bounce back off his last. A couple of horses in here just ran huge races (Carnack & Elite Squadron), so I'll pass on them for now...and simply box Hewitts, Noonmark, and Isle Warrior.
The La Troienne is a race I'll probably just sit out, but I'm interested to see how Secret Gypsy runs. She shattered Mayakovsky's (one of my favorite horses EVER) track record in her debut, and hasn't been seen since. We'll see if she's a freak or not...Game Face will probably take all the $ and may be the best horse right now though.
The Distaff Turf M. will feature Dreaming of Anna and I'm inclined to play against her since she's coming off a monster race and has every right to regress, especially cutting back to the tricky 8F. I'm going to give Sharp Susan a hard look...she loves the mile and had a nice comeback race at KEE. Ventura is another potential monster once she gets rolling. Gotta respect Frankel, and this horse probably has her best days ahead of her. Box those two with Anna and hope for the price.
The Humana should be Hystericalady's chance to shine. She won this race last year and should win it again. She seemed in better form last year, but less than her best is still in line with Sugar Swirl, her main competitor. A horse I'd love to use underneath (wish I could actually wager here!) is Intagaroo. Shes' pretty consistent, and won the G1 on the synth at SA, actually beating Hystericalady. With her breeding, dirt should not be an issue, but can she ship? I'd use her in an exacta with the 'Lady to get a good price horse in there.
The Woodford boils down to three horses for me: Einstein (the class of the field), Golden Balls, who came back off the shelf in a nice run and may improve, and Duveen who was a nice horse last year against his own age group and switches barns off the layoff. Duveen might need a race, but this will be a good indicator of how he might fit into the division this year. Einstein is a top contedner and could easily win this...but he'll be a short price. Thankfully we have the exacta box. :)
And, I'm not set on the Derby yet, but Colonel John is my top pick. I'd love to see him win, and he's got a good shot unless Big brown is a total freak. It's hard for me to throw money on a horse who's feet are held together by epoxy and breaks from the 20-hole though. Other horses I'll likely use are: Court Vision, Eight Belles, Z Fortune, Pyro, Monba, and possibly Z Humor and Gayego. I'm spreading in this race... it's one of the toughest to handicap.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
