Racing has a way of keeping us humble. I'm big on statistics but some days the book just gets thrown out and this Breeders Cup was one of them. It seems like every stat I posted was contradicted :)
The Profile of a Winner had its worst year ever, by far.
The Fave-All exacta didnt work.
Two horses won BC races after being over 10/1 in thier last start. It had happened just once in 116 tries prior to that.
Thor's Echo becomes the first horse to win the Sprint without having ever won a Graded stakes or even a stakes of any kind at 6f.
Red Rocks became the first winner of the BC Turf without having ever won a Graded stakes.
That means next year is a make or break. There are always times when nothing works. If it happens twice in a row it becomes a pattern. But I think it also demonstrates why some common sense and good old fashioned handicapping is useful. Stats dont tell the whole story and there are exceptions to every rule.
