This isnt the most exciting week in racing although we are gearing up for the Hollywood juvenile stakes. The real buzz going around right now is about the return of Half Ours. The attraction with him is three-fold. First off he is a $6.1 million dollar horse, he cant help but attract attention with a purchase price like that. Secondly he runs for high profile connections. Pletcher and Jones arent usually far away from the limelight and horse connected with them are almost expected to be good. Thirdly this horse is widely hyped because no one has gotten near him yet. As a 2yo he destroyed both fields that he faced and became a listed stakes winner.
But that was May and April of 2005. What do you do with him in Aqueduct's 8th on Thursday? He hasnt run in 18 months, he has never faced open company and he has never even been past 5f in a race or timed workout. He looked brilliant as 2yo but this isnt maiden company. I think Half Ours will be bet down heavily and thus I'm going to let him beat me. Sure he could run off with this race but with all the questions swirling around he's not for me.
One of my favorite plays is finding what I believe to be vulnerable combackers in spots like this and use the most logical in form horse against them. For me that horse is Touchdown Kid. If you look at his lifetime record on dirt tracks other than Belmont he is 4-3-1-0. His lone defeat coming in his first lifetime start to Canteen who went on to be a stakes winner. He is undefeated over the track and actually got his best lifetime figure in that performance. He is in good form as well as he won a decent race last out. Hopefully you can get 4/1 or more on him.
