Sovereign Awards

The Sovereign Awards are Canada's answer to the Eclipse awards. They will be decided before the end of the year. There is really just one stakes race left to contest and that is the Valedictory Stakes this coming weekend. The 6th ranked older dirt horse Barracuda Boy is set to contest that race and he may propel himself into a top 3 placing with a win but he wont trouble the head of the division. Below I have listed the TCR rankings for the Canadian racing season. One of the advantages of the TCR is that it can be used in any context. Its not tailored to the America only. The scores are on average much lower because there are a dearth of graded stakes races in Canada. And not only that but a good amount of the major races are restricted to Canadian breds thus they are subject to further reduction.

One of the rules of eligability for the Sovereign awards is that the horse must have run at least 3 times in Canada. So horses like Collier Hill, Gouldings Grenn and Noble Stella cannot be included in the voting consideration.

Horse of the Year comes down to True Metropolitan and Arravale. Despite True Metropolitan's superior ranking I think Arravale is the most deserving winner. True Metropolitan didnt win a G-1 race nor did he even compete in one. That fact is tempered with the knowledge that there isnt a single G-1 on dirt for older males in Canada but Arravale is a 2 time G-1 winner. The way the TCR system is recommended to be used is to have the points standings be just 50% of the final consideration. The other 50% would be decided by vote. I'm quite sure that Arravale's voting support would be enough to capture her the Horse of the Year.

Hello Kennedy,
very attractive site and lots of good writing.
I don't have the standings on my Blog mainly because I forget, ha ha. I have had toruble keeping a steady pace on my blog and i hope to get into more of a routine next year. I enjoy it, it's a nice little release.
I like your Sovereign award ratings, perhaps maybe next year you can send them to me and i will post those ones, and give you credit - you know like - Kennedy's Kritters, ha ha, kidding, but think about it. Just for your info, the Sovereign award voting closed yesterday (we had to have our votes in by 5 pm), so the Valedictory does not figure in the awards....
