Weekend Overview: It looked underwhelming going into the weekend and it fully lived up to its billing. There is really very little to even give an overview of. The biggest news of the weekend is that Tiz Wonderful (KC's top ranked Derby horse) is off the Derby trail. The language of his announcement made it seem as though he may still run in the spring.
Performance of the Weekend: I'm giving this one to Ah Day for his run in the Fire Plug stakes at Laurel. He achieved the highest Beyer Speed Figure of the year to date (110) and looked pretty impressive beating a solid group of sprinters. Ah Day has often flirted with the big time but has never really achieved much in his brushes with the limelight. Although I'm a sure a performance like this will have his connections hoping to face graded stakes company next time out.
Race of the Weekend: Despite the failure of Boboman to go on and have an impact in this race it was visually appealing to watch. A solid pace was cut out and 3 horses emerged in the stretch to battle it out. I though Frankel's Notable Guest was exposed a little prematurely but he did put in a solid run. One Off came flying on the outside and picked them off late in what was a thrilling stretch run. I doubt any of these horse will go on to bigger and better things but the great thing about racing is that you can have great races without great horses.
Flop of the Weekend: Declan's Moon continues his terrible slide down the class rankings. The horse clearly has a mental problem and needs to be stopped on. He has been terrible ever since his injury as a 3yo. I never thought he was all he was made out to be but he's better than this.
TCR Movers and Shakers: One Off and Friendly Island were the biggest gainers this week based on the fact that they both won G-2's and right now 22 points is enough to get you into the top 10. In fact only 11 horses have broken 20 points. Harvard Avenue moves to second overall simply because he is the first horse this year to run in and score points in two races. The biggest TCR news right now is the announcement of the first TCR award winners tommorow. This is your last day to vote. If you have not already filled out a ballot visit this link!
Tip O'the Cap: Garrett Gomez gets this weeks tip o'the cap for his five bagger on Saturday at Santa Anita. To win 5 races on any card is difficult but to win 5 in row in something much more unique. In fact Gomez himself hadn't done it since 1991. Gomez is a leading candidate for the Eclipse jockey award and he is already riding as if he intends to be a contender for the 2007 trophy.
KC Handicapping: Well it was bound to happen, I made a complete hash of every race I handicapped this weekend. As a handicapper you know these times are inevitable you just have to shake your head and get back at it. Thankfully this wasn't Sunshine Millions weekend.

regarding declan moon i think i recall bob baffert saying that war emblem had 'gotten smart" in explaining why war emblem quit putting forth the effort that he was capable of// i took that as meaning that the horse had figured out that for him this racing thing wasn't worth the effort
